Gumtree has been a great marketplace in the past for buying and selling cheap stuff quickly to other locals. Over time, Gumtree has been flooded with crap and scams, so there are plenty of people out there (including me) who have wanted to delete their Gumtree account.
There may be a range of reasons to close your Gumtree account. Personally, it was finding their terms of service, which included:
After searching for some time, it was clear there is very little information available. And none could be found on Gumtree. Which suggests that the organisation wants to make it rather difficult indeed to delete your account. While the account has valuable data in it, Gumtree is able to profit from the information.
One option that I found was to contact Gumtree staff directly and request a deletion of your account.
Unfortunately that link appears to be broken. What you do find is a page that you are able to contact the Gumtree team in a roundabout sort of way. Click on the drop down menu on “Other” and then type something similar to “Delete Account” in the box below. After you click “Next”, you will find several additional boxes available. Fill all of these out with your information and then click “Submit Ticket”.
Gumtree staff will presumably be notified of your intent. What worries me about this process is the difficulty of removing your personal and somewhat private information. Gumtree relies on laziness from its users not to delete their data. Interestingly, JustDeleteMe rated the UK version of Gumtree as Easy to delete your information. Perhaps the Australian office could take a leaf out of their book.
