Eurogamer has reported of Diablo 3 accounts being hacked. A quick online search generates many reports of the same nature.
Eurogamer writer Christian Donlan saw his account hijacked over the weekend by someone named Anna. The below screenshot is of her conversation with Eurogamer reviews editor Oli Welsh.
Players are reporting the loss of items from their character inventory and stash, leaving their accounts stripped bare. Blizzard, at this stage, is working on unravelling affected accounts to a point prior to account being hijacked. However, some progress is lost.
Diablo 3’s community manager Bashiok took to the forums and responded to the hacking issue. To sum up, Blizzard is blaming the problem on passwords that aren’t backed up by an official Battle.net authenticator.
“We’ve been taking the situation extremely seriously from the start, and have done everything possible to verify how and in what circumstances these compromises are occurring. Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person’s account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password.”
However, Bashiok also confirms that the authenticator isn’t a 100-percent security measure, guaranteeing the protection of one’s account.
“We have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand,” he adds. “If your account has been hacked, please view the previous post for information on contacting our support department.”
Hopefully the situation can be remedied quickly with minimal impact to players and their accounts.
