If you’re looking for an action film with attractive actors, then this just might be the film for you. GI Joe: Retaliation is the second of the GI Joe films to grace our screens (GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra released in 2009).
With a substantial list of well-known actors, and plenty of money to throw around during production, one would expect a solid film. And it was. Actors include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum and Jonathan Pryce. The Rock reminds viewers that his wrestling career didn’t finish long ago at all. His moves were impressive, and there’s no doubt that he is a massive unit (frequently taking up the vast majority of the screen). Several other actors try hard to make an impact, but were dominated by the big names. Bruce Willis still has what it takes – and this should also be confirmed in his other latest film A Good Day to Die Hard.
As with other films in the action/superhero/special forces genre, GI Joe is reasonably predictable, and provides very little plot. To boil it down, the Joes need to prevent the end of the world and mass destruction from a very naughty person. The Joes face adversity and risk, but use their smarts and skills to overcome obstacles and prove that they will continue to protect the world from evil. Using characters from the previous film and giving the audience a little bit of mystery and a twist was a nice touch.
Overall, GI Joe: Retaliation was an acceptable film – but nothing special. Not as good as the first GI Joe though. Perhaps worth a look on DVD – 5.5/10.
