A staggering 21,855 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year. Unfortunately, this figure includes around 7,532 deaths, which is why promotional fundraising events such as Relay For Life are crucial to raising awareness and honouring the lives of people affected by cancer.
Relay For Life is the heart and soul of Cancer Council Queensland, and an exciting fundraising event for the whole family. During the 22nd-23rd of March, 10-15 teams of supporters gather together at the Cleveland Showgrounds in support of those affected, or those who have passed away, from cancer. At dusk the showgrounds are lined with candles, where family and friends can celebrate the lives of their loved ones touched by the disease.
First introduced to Queensland in 2001, the event raised $3.5 million in 2010, a staggering figure that grows every year. 22% of all cancer related deaths are caused by tobacco smoking. For many years Queensland had the nation’s worst tobacco control laws, however after extensive campaigns, the sunshine state now has the most comprehensive tobacco control laws in Australia. This testament is proof that Cancer Council Queensland can make a difference, which is why Relay For Life is such an important event to raise awareness of the impact of cancer.
All funds raised during the event go towards the Cancer Council Queensland’s education and prevention programs, as well as cancer research to find better treatments, and continued advocacy towards making this issue a governmental priority.
