Side Effects details the fall of a young woman suffering from mental illness (played by Rooney Mara) and using a new drug prescribed by her psychiatrist (Jude Law) with seemingly dangerous side effects.
The film focuses on Emily Taylor and her life. She has a husband (Channing Tatum) who returns from a stint in prison. This is clearly a big issue for Emily, and her behaviour becomes erratic and culminates with a tragedy. Emily then faces the judicial system.
As her psychiatrist, treating her since her husband completes his jail time, Dr Jonathan Banks tries to get to the bottom of the mystery. He contacts Emily’s previous psychiatrist (Catherine Zeta-Jones) for her patient history and help with the case.
Dr Banks continues to struggles with the case and as he focuses all of his efforts on his theory, his life collapses. Dr Banks’s job, professionally reputation and family are all placed in jeopardy. He needs all of his wits to find out what happened with Emily Taylor, and get his life back.
With some excellent twists and a good cast this is a solid film focusing on the use of drugs in the psychiatric industry. The only downside is that it became a little too unbelievable near the ending. But that doesn’t ruin the film.
Overall a decent film. 7/10.
