Who Voted for Tony Abbott?

Who on earth voted for Tony Abbott to become our next Prime Minister? Was it you, Queensland? You squealed like a 12-year-old One Direction fan every time Bob Katter made a campaign appearance. You even went as far as to allow Clive Palmer into the Senate. I expected better of you.

tony abbott2Maybe you know something about this, Victoria? Did Western Australia pressure you into it? Thirteen seats to none, Western Australia. How could you disappoint us like that? Tasmania, honey, I know you’re only small and you fought so hard against it, and yet you still couldn’t stand true to yourself.

As for our territories, you have not always set the benchmark for rationality and common sense, but you sure showed us this time by refusing to succumb to the ludicrousness that is the Liberal Party. Perhaps the other states should take a leaf out of your book.

Every individual, every political discourse, every radio talk-show indicated that Australia did not trust, did not agree with and most certainly did not want Tony Abbott as our Prime Minister. And yet, somehow, here we are …

As Julia Gillard pointed out to us, Mr Abbott is, without a shadow of a doubt, a misogynist. He is also a man who arrived in Australia as an immigrant, but who vehemently declares that ‘we will stop the boats’. Most of all, he is a man who desperately needs to reacquaint himself with the definition of being ‘liberal’. Australia, this is a man so far right-wing, so regressive, so politically inept that even the ever-diplomatic Waleed Aly does not understand what you see in him.

For heaven’s sake, Australia – as a result of your woefully poor judgement our nation is condemned to degenerate for the coming leadership term. I don’t know who voted for Mr Abbott, but you now have three years to think about your actions. I only hope you’ll realise the error of your ways.

I understand exactly how you feel. I even joined up with the socialist movement to try to rally against him. But it’s just no use. People voted for the lesser of two evils, forgetting it’s better to keep the guy you know in power instead of inviting in a whole new evil to infiltrate the country.
