Wilsons Promontory National Park is one of the best known and popular National Parks in Victoria and Australia. Located at the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland, Wilsons Promontory is a particularly beautiful part of the world.
Many people stay at the Tidal River camp located deep within the National Park. Facilities here include camping grounds, a general store, BBQ equipment and bathroom facilities.
If you’re lucky enough to stay in some of the cabins though, you’re in for a real treat! With room for six, a heater and quality bathroom and kitchen facilities it’s a great place to soak in the goodness of Wilsons Promontory – but not rough it. Highly recommended when visiting in the middle of Winter.
It’s a great place to go to get some fresh air and away from the city. Very few people are willing to drive for about 2.5 hours (from Melbourne) unless they are willing to spend some serious time at the Park unless it’s the height of Summer.
A number of great walking tracks are worth trying. Squeaky Beach is one of the most popular, and is only 2.5km from Tidal River. Squeaky Beach gets its name from the squeaky noise created when visitors walk the pristine sand.
Wildlife is pretty common at Wilsons Promontory, with wombats, native birds, kangaroos and even emus sighted frequently. In fact, wombats are so used to the human interaction (those located at Tidal River, anyway) that visitors are likely to see them when walking around near tents and cabins. Wombats are particularly active during the morning and evening.
Wilsons Promontory is one of the best places to visit. If you go in Winter, make sure you are well and truly prepared for the weather. If you go in Summer, prepare for large crowds at this very popular National Park!
